This book takes an agressive approach to learning, with each “week” adding a lot of new concepts. I know a little bit about music, but I’m new to the guitar. For me, I like it a lot. People who don’t play another instrument might find it more intimidating, I’m not sure. But then, no one is forcing you to finish a week’s lessons in an actual week.
What the hell!?!? Jimmy page is the greatest guitarist ever! And this is coming from a guy who has listened to many many types of music… Page is one of the reasons I fell in love Led zeppelin… From Hendrix to Vaughan to Clapton to slash to Johnson to sambora to gilmour to Santana nobody mesmerised me more than page did… He made his guitar TALK. Phhff, bucket head? Gimme a rest! Just give a listen to Achilles last stand or any song from led zeppelin 1, 2, 4, HOTH or Physical Graffiti. In my view all of the albums led zeppelin had produced rocked! Page forever!
An electric guitar with a folding neck called the “Foldaxe” was designed and built for Chet Atkins by Roger C. Field.[20] Steinberger guitars developed a line of exotic, carbon fiber instruments without headstocks, with tuning done on the bridge instead.
I would have put Rory Gallagher and Mark knopfler a lot further up the list. And what about Chet Atkins? None the less, this is a great list and must have taken a huge amount of time and effort to do it. Thanks.
Second only to the Strat in electric guitar terms is the famous Les Paul shape. Introduced by Gibson in the 1950s, the Les Paul offers a slightly different playing experience on account of it usually being constructed from mahogany, which provides a warmer tone which rings out for longer. Les Pauls usually feature two humbucker pickups, which add extra girth and roundness to your tone and make them ideally suited to players looking for something a little bit heavier. Plenty of other manufacturers offer variations on the Les Paul theme, and there’s even a Gibson-affiliated range from Epiphone, so if it’s a Les Paul you’re after then there’s plenty to choose from.
I think for the general beginner an electric guitar is probably the best instrument, mainly because they are a little easier to play and so you will see results faster, which will inspire you to play more.
Many people think that electric guitars are going to be loud when they are plugged in… well, they do have a volume control, so you can control the volume. Also, be aware that you do not have to plug them in! I do probably half of my practice on electric guitar without any amp at all. It’s good to get the notes ringing out loud and clear without an amp, so as a beginner you might want to put all your money into getting a cool guitar and leave getting an amp until later.

I’m sorry but… Greatful Dead? For a list that wishes to show 150 great guitar players, I think it would be more proper to ensure that every name, band or otherwise, is spelled correctly. Also, George Lynch appears twice on the list, numbers 65 AND 130. These are the only problems I have with this list, otherwise, I approve and appreciate all of these choices!

His live performances are the greatest EVER in Rock n’ Roll history. He should be #1. Jimi SUCKS. Just watch live performances for Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, T.N.T, Moneytalks, (pretty much ALL of AC/DC’s songs)

Either way, we’ve got you covered with this guide.
Admit it. You’ve slow danced to Stairway To Heaven before. Page’s playing have influenced so many guitar players of today, and Led Zeppelin revolutionized Rock and Roll blending acoustic guitars, banjos, and mandolins while still staying with the same gritty rock image. His guitar riffs are forever etched into Rock and Roll’s hall of fame. How influential was he? Step into a guitar store, and you’ll see. Thousands of 12 year old kids across the globe are playing the intro to Stairway. Now that’s how you know you’ve made it.
Player’s is the kind of place where you could drop by, grab a chair and listen to some great stories, and even partake in some great conversation. And when it comes to guitars; be it lessons, repair, sales, purchases and trades, and just pure knowledge; the place is second to none! And the staff: the guitar instructors, are absolutely the epitome in their profession.

You sure can! That’s how I learned. They’re not really designed for that but nothing should get damaged and it’s fine for learning. If it’s an expensive instrument you might look into getting a Flamenco Guard to strop the pick damaging the wood, but I think war wounds can make a guitar look cool and so I never used anything like that!
I recently saw this guitar player and he has truly been I guess hiding because he makes a lot of the names on your list look bad. His name is Tobi Hero. More people need to check this dude out. Help him if you can because he is something else.
Electric guitar necks vary in composition and shape. The primary metric of guitar necks is the scale length, which is the vibrating length of the strings from nut to bridge. A typical Fender guitar uses a 25.5-inch scale length, while Gibson uses a 24.75-inch scale length in their Les Paul. While the scale length of the Les Paul is often described as 24.75 inches, it has varied through the years by as much as a half inch.[citation needed]

the best you can get – as a fact – is, when you can learn through reading, hearing, seeing & doing. The best way to learn in my opinion is definitively if i have a Book and a guy explaning me what it means and showing me how it works.
As Fender has it’s ‘other’ guitar with the Telecaster, so Gibson has it’s slightly less famous sibling for the Les Paul in its iconic SG style. These guitars are all-out rock and blues machines, and can be found in the hands of guitarists like Angus Young from AC/DC and Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath. The SG body is noticeably thinner than a Les Paul, with the double cutaways offering significantly better access to the higher frets. They score heavily on the looks front, being perhaps the most distinctive of the main body shapes, and are comfortable enough for long playing sessions.
In the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, a growing number of composers (many of them composer-performers who had grown up playing the instrument in rock bands) began writing contemporary classical music for the electric guitar. These include Frank Zappa, Shawn Lane, Steven Mackey, Nick Didkovsky, Scott Johnson, Lois V Vierk, Tim Brady, Tristan Murail, and Randall Woolf.
Although they just released the Gibson 2016 line, Gibson’s first production electric guitar, marketed in 1936, was the ES-150 model (“ES” for “Electric Spanish” and “150” reflecting the $150 price of the instrument). The ES-150 guitar featured a single-coil, hexagonally shaped pickup, which was designed by Walt Fuller. It became known as the “Charlie Christian” pickup, named for the great jazz guitarist who was among the first to perform with the ES-150 guitar. The ES-150 achieved some popularity, but suffered from unequal loudness across the six strings.

Substitution of another device for the plectrum, for instance the cello bow (as famously used by Jimmy Page) and the e-bow, a device using electromagnetic feedback to vibrate strings without direct contact. Like feedback, these techniques increase sustain, bring out harmonics and change the acoustic envelope.
Keith Richards on 10 and John Williams and Julian Bream on 74/75? That must be a kind of joke. Both, Williams and Bream, will easily knock-out 90 % of the Rock heroes, when it comes to guitar technique. Also some Jazz guitarists like John McLaughlin are much underrated. Musical skills are more important than fame regardless of the style a guitarist is playing.

okay we have a problem here. How can John Mayer be ranked two places above Matt Bellamy? I seriously dont get it. By the way Matthew Bellamy is guitar god ( okay okay along with Slash , Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain etcetera etcetera but still)

This guide is as marvelously written as it is exceedingly informative. It takes a long look at each of the major and minor American guitar companies — Gibson chief among them — and recounts the story of every guitar to come off their workbenches. Buoyed by scads of historical photos and thoroughly researched copy, this book earns its place at the top of this list.
Buckethead would be Top 5 easy if he were more mainstream. The man can play anything and make it his own. If you’re interested, I’d give “Nottingham Lace”, “Final Wars”, “Big Sur Moon”, “Population Override”, and “Soothsayer” a try just to get an idea of what I’m talking about. The sky is the limit from there.
