Electric guitars were originally designed by acoustic guitar makers and instrument manufacturers. Some of the earliest electric guitars adapted hollow-bodied acoustic instruments and used tungsten pickups. The first electrically amplified guitar was designed in 1931 by George Beauchamp, the general manager of the National Guitar Corporation, with Paul Barth, who was vice president.[3] The maple body prototype for the one-piece cast aluminium “frying pan” was built by Harry Watson, factory superintendent of the National Guitar Corporation.[3] Commercial production began in late summer of 1932 by the Ro-Pat-In Corporation (Electro-Patent-Instrument Company), in Los Angeles,[4][5] a partnership of Beauchamp, Adolph Rickenbacker (originally Rickenbacher), and Paul Barth.[6] In 1934, the company was renamed the Rickenbacker Electro Stringed Instrument Company. In that year Beauchamp applied for a United States patent for an Electrical Stringed Musical Instrument and the patent was issued in 1937.[7][8][9][10]
I am a beginner and based on your recommendation, I bought the Dummies book, and signed up for Guitartricks.com as well. This combo is turning out to be really effective for me, I haven’t been playing long but I can feel the progress with each passing day. The videos at Guitartricks are my main guide through this maze of learning, and the Guitar for Dummies is my go-to resource for reading about anything I want to find out. I’m sure doing a search on the internet would get me the same result, but the Dummies book is easier to hit up I think, and at least I’m sure it’s accurate.
Next up we have the specialty electric guitars. This category consists of several different types of electric guitars, but we’ll start out with 12-string electric guitars. The fact that the low E, A, D, and G strings all feature higher octave strings while the B and high e strings both have additional strings that are tuned the same, electric guitar 12-string models have a distinctive shimmer and richness to them that guitar players love. Guitar players who favor heavier genres like death metal or hard rock may want to add a 7-string, an 8-string, or even a 9-string electric guitar to their rig for when they need some extra low-end growl and power. Other specialty guitars include baritone guitars, double neck electric guitars, and pedal steel guitars & lap steel guitars.
Tapping, in which both hands are applied to the fretboard. Tapping may be performed either one-handed or two-handed. It is an extended technique, executed by using one hand to tap the strings against the fingerboard, thus producing legato notes. Tapping usually incorporates pull-offs or hammer-ons as well, where the fingers of the left hand play a sequence of notes in synchronization with the tapping hand.

On guitar, the note patterns are a little more complex because each string has a different arrangement of notes. For a beginner, it is much more difficult to know which string to use when the pitch goes higher or lower. Unlike a piano, the guitar needs to be tuned before you play, which is another learning curve students must conquer quickly. Otherwise, they will only be able to tune once a week when they see their guitar teacher.
The following figure illustrates a typical heavy-metal riff using both movable and open-position power chords. If you have an electric guitar and an amp or effect device that enables you to overdrive it, use distortion while practicing this progression. You can use either the two- or three-string version of the power chords.
Where are the brazilian guitar players? Don’t you know Kiko Loreiro, Rafael Bittencourt (both Angra), Eduardo Ardanuy (Dr. Sin), Robertinho do Recife, Hugo and Luis Mariutti (André Matos), Frank Solari? You know them and many others amazing guitar players in this website http://www.heavymetalbrasil.net/guitarristasdobrasil.html
The colors are bold, and while the designs of the guitars’ bodies aren’t radical, the necks are a bit of a departure and the headstocks could have been taken from a Stratocaster. (Fender has done this before — and there’s currently one acoustic, the Sonoran, in its range that evokes the look of the company’s electrics.)
Some of the other that you can check is Amaj, Cmaj, Dmaj, Emaj, Cmaj9 and Gmaj. Those are the major chords that you can start to grip on. For the minor chords are the following: Ami, which is similar to Emaj wherein you will see in a chord chart that Ami really looks like Emaj, and the Emi. Those are the only two minor chords that you need to now right now because when we get to barre chords where you will learn later on after getting on the scales and riffs. Then you will learn all the minor chords across the entire guitar lesson.
After reading through Teach Yourself to Play Guitar, my opinion is that if you are giving a guitar as a gift to someone, this might be an OK book to accompany that. If you wanted to spend a bit more, or are looking for a book for yourself, I would go with the 2nd book reviewed below, the Guitar for Dummies book. It has online video and audio demos, and hearing what you should be playing helps when learning music… 😉
You’re right, guitar playing is not about competition. I made the list for fun, to inspire people to listen to great guitar players. And for people to comment to the list and add their personal favorites.
Although a power chord consists of only two different notes that are always five steps apart, such as A–E or C–G, the actual chord that you play may involve more than two strings, because you may be doubling each of the notes that make up the power chord.
The use of the vibrato bar (whammy bar or tremolo arm), including the extreme technique of dive bombing. The tremolo arm varies string tension to raise or lower pitch. Instead of bending individual notes, this lets the player bend all notes at once to sound lower or higher.
One of the most impressive guitars on this list when it comes to style is this C-1 SGR from Schecter – a respected brand in the world of rock and metal. With a design that’s heavily influenced by their premium C1 models, this affordable alternative features a solid basswood body that’s arched and contoured for great comfort, allowing unhindered access to the 24-fret maple neck. Some of the appointments – such as the custom 12th fret inlay and black chrome hardware – set this model apart from so many run-of-the-mill entry-level electric guitars. Electronics are hard to complain about, with two decent humbuckers and simple controls. Throw in a cool Schecter bag and you have one outstanding cheap guitar! More details? I was in the store this week, getting a string change, and found a G…REAT thinline double humbucker telecaster with locking tuners and had been re-fretted. AWESOME. Pretty huge selection of guitars and basses there at the moment (as of yesterday). See More
Called the “California Series,” they aren’t going to be for everybody. The quick take here is that these are acoustics for electric players — and very much intended to deliver a visual punch when played live.
Fender held an event in New York to introduce the lineup, and I attended and got to sample a few of the new guitars. These are China-made instruments, but the quality is quite good (as it is for Fender’s more traditional Paramount lineup of acoustics, which I’ve also fiddled with) and there’s no questioning how much fun it is to get your hands on such expressive axes.

Nice list Klaus, but probably not really possible to do(so). So many names are missing. And K. Richards between Cooder and Frusciante?!?! Sorry, but not in my observable universe. And,(i´m serious as cancer, Klaus), you are not allowed to forget about Neil Schon. I have seen this small man live in 2008, and I can tell you Klaus, you cannot, I repeat: CAN!NOT!….. ignore this guitar player! Never ever. No way. Even for an unperfect list, even if you really do not like the music of Journey, this is an “unforgivable” mistake. But do not fret, Klaus; nobody´s perfect……;)
7 Yngwie Malmsteen Yngwie Johan Malmsteen is a Swedish guitarist, songwriter and bandleader who was born on June 30th, 1963, in Stockholm, Sweden. He was known for his neoclassical metal playing style back in the 1980s.
So Fender, a company started in 1946, does electric. But as Mooney also pointed out to me, there’s been notable growth in acoustic-guitar sales of late, driven mainly by women taking up the instrument, inspired by artists such as Taylor Swift.
No Stephen Carpenter?? He has to be definitely in the top 150. May not be the most technically advanced but he has played so many different styles with the Deftones, and makes the most awesome and beautiful riffs that have been made!
Spend a little time learning how to play them cleanly, making sure every note pressed rings clear and every string you don’t need is muted. Trust me, nothing breaks the ambiance of a beautiful song like a muffled or sloppy chord.
Of course, this top-down lecturing is all very abstract without examples. Let me give you the worst case scenario. My school talent show, 2008. Two friends of mine performED an ambitious but utterly inappropriate Metallica cover in front of the other students, their parents and the faculty. It was excruciating. Although the solos (presumably the only thing they had bothered to practice) were technically flawless, the whole song was undone by their terrible rhythm. The timing of the song became displaced, the chords were so badly fingered that it was difficult to hear the riff and consequently the whole performance fell apart. They looked like morons. They had sacrificed learning basic rhythm and paid the price. Make sure you don’t do the same.
I guess since he’s not even on the list no one has heard of him. But in my opinion, he is much better than many of those who are at the top of this list. Just listen to his Second Winter album and you will see the light.
Although they just released the Gibson 2016 line, Gibson’s first production electric guitar, marketed in 1936, was the ES-150 model (“ES” for “Electric Spanish” and “150” reflecting the $150 price of the instrument). The ES-150 guitar featured a single-coil, hexagonally shaped pickup, which was designed by Walt Fuller. It became known as the “Charlie Christian” pickup, named for the great jazz guitarist who was among the first to perform with the ES-150 guitar. The ES-150 achieved some popularity, but suffered from unequal loudness across the six strings.
Always get the facts. Ask what has been done to make the instrument easier to play. Many important issues rest on the quality and playability of your instrument. There is no greater impedance to progress, developing proper technique and the enjoyment of learning to play than a poorly constructed instrument or one that is not correctly set up. Both the electric and the acoustic guitar will play with relative ease as long as they are properly adjusted and the size is well suited for the player.

Since chord chart are typically written for right-handed guitarists, they provide a challenge to left- handed players, who have to do a bit of revisualization by flipping the chart around. If a given source doesn’t provide a left-handed version, you can download left-handed charts online.
I would have put Rory Gallagher and Mark knopfler a lot further up the list. Wnd what about Chet Atkins? None the less, it is a great list and must have taken a huge amount of time and effort to do it. Thanks.
Though it gained immense popularity during the rock ‘n’ roll days of the 1950s and 1960s, the electric guitar was invented in 1931. The need for the amplified guitar became apparent during the Big Band Era as orchestras increased in size, particularly when guitars had to compete with large brass sections. The first electric guitars used in jazz were hollow archtop acoustic guitar bodies with electromagnetic transducers. By 1932, an electrically amplified guitar was commercially available. Early electric guitar manufacturers include Rickenbacker in 1932, Dobro in 1933, National, Epiphone and Gibson in 1935 and many others by 1936.
Should be higher, and I wish he was. Pink Floyd are my favourite band, and David Gilmour’s guitar solos can be matched by few, if any. Gilmour is famous for his bluesy, slow style that puts the emphasis on phrasing rather than technique. – Floods
Second only to the Strat in electric guitar terms is the famous Les Paul shape. Introduced by Gibson in the 1950s, the Les Paul offers a slightly different playing experience on account of it usually being constructed from mahogany, which provides a warmer tone which rings out for longer. Les Pauls usually feature two humbucker pickups, which add extra girth and roundness to your tone and make them ideally suited to players looking for something a little bit heavier. Plenty of other manufacturers offer variations on the Les Paul theme, and there’s even a Gibson-affiliated range from Epiphone, so if it’s a Les Paul you’re after then there’s plenty to choose from.
Shouldn’t even be questioned. Ever hear of ‘Voodoo Child’? Yeah, that was recorded in one take. & almost entirely improvised. & it’s the greatest recording of an electric guitar being played EVER. & this isn’t from some idiot who just listens to a lot of music, I play the guitar and have done a lot of reading and I know a few of your favorite guitarists would agree with me.
Use of audio feedback to enhance sustain and change timbre. Feedback has become a striking characteristic of rock music, as electric guitar players such as Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend and Jimi Hendrix deliberately induced feedback by holding their guitars close to the amplifier. Lou Reed created his 1975 album Metal Machine Music entirely from loops of feedback played at various speeds. A good example of feedback can be heard on Jimi Hendrix’s performance of “Can You See Me?” at the Monterey Pop Festival. The entire guitar solo was created using amplifier feedback.[24]
By the 1950’s, brands like Gibson and Fender were gaining notoriety thanks to the popularity of rock ‘n’ roll and its stars. Players like Dick Dale, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and Chet Atkins could all be found carving their own places in music history with the electric guitar, and by the early 60’s the instrument saw an extraordinary upsurge in popularity. Today, there are an endless amount of rock sub-genres, making no shortage of superbly crafted electric guitars from the world biggest brands, including Ibanez, Epiphone, and Danelectro, as well as Godin, Gretsch, Peavey and more. Whether you’re into black metal or folk rock, you can be sure that there’s an electric guitar that perfectly matches your own style and tastes, and it can easily be found right here, regardless of your skill level or budget.

Early proponents of the electric guitar on record include Alvino Rey (Phil Spitalney Orchestra), Les Paul (Fred Waring Orchestra), Danny Stewart (Andy Iona Orchestra), George Barnes (under many aliases), Lonnie Johnson, Floyd Smith, Big Bill Broonzy, T-Bone Walker, George Van Eps, Charlie Christian (Benny Goodman Orchestra), Tampa Red, Memphis Minnie, and Arthur Crudup.
Much later I began listening to pretty much the rest of the list presented below. Listening to all these guitar players enriched my playing and my life as a musician and music lover. I hope it does the same for you.
