Turn all the knobs on the guitar all the way up, and adjust your sound on the amp. Get a sound you like. If you want to experiment a bit, try changing some of the guitar controls and see what happens, you shouldn’t damage anything! The all up on the guitar and adjusting the amp is the kind of default settings for most players!

Yeah. He may have to sit down when he plays, but he’ll have you on your feet when he does. BB’s creamy yet piercing tone, his unique vibrato and his absolute flawless ability to express his emotions through the guitar earn him a spot in the top ten. King’s years of fame haven’t gone to his head. He is still as humble as ever giving front row seat tickets to fans waiting in a cold parking lot just to have a glimpse of him. BB King can’t play chords. Nor does he sing and play at the same time. But he has worldwide recognition of his accomplishments as an artist. That’s a mark of a truly great guitarist.
On guitar, the note patterns are a little more complex because each string has a different arrangement of notes. For a beginner, it is much more difficult to know which string to use when the pitch goes higher or lower. Unlike a piano, the guitar needs to be tuned before you play, which is another learning curve students must conquer quickly. Otherwise, they will only be able to tune once a week when they see their guitar teacher.

I recommend that you get a guitar with a low action so that it can be played easily. The small tonal benefits of having a higher action can be dealt with in a few years when it becomes important. At the start what is important is enjoying playing!
My favourite adage applies: buy cheap, buy twice. I rate the Yamaha Pacifica guitars (which start around £200/$350). They have a thin neck (which is good for rock) and consistently excellent build quality. I don’t think there is much of a question about the quality of these guitars and most of the other teachers I respect recommend them as well. There are many cheaper guitars out there but for the few pounds you will save you are much better off going for a Pacifica in my humble opinion. I never owned one myself (and I don’t have any kind of deal going with them at all), but have played many that students bought in over the years, which is why I recommend them to you!
This is a great DVD, and Keith’s style is very laid back, and easy to listen to. You can’t help but like the guy, and once you start watching the DVD, you don’t want to stop. He is extremely knowledgable, and it is like having an instructor right there with you. The DVD begins with the very basics, and works up to some quite complicated playing, so there would be something in this for everyone, from complete beginners (like me) to those looking for more challenges with their playing. For the price, I don’t think you can go wrong.
After reviewing the Les Paul Special II, it was clear that it was the guitar to beat. Cut to the classic Les Paul shape, it features both a solid mahogany body and a bolt-on SlimTaper D-shaped mahogany neck, which is home to a rosewood fretboard and 22 frets. The sound comes from an Epiphone-designed 650R humbucker at the neck and 700T humbucker at the bridge, giving ample Les Paul tone, while a 3-way pickup selector switch, along with individual volume and tone controls, give you some versatility in tone. A LockTone tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, combined with 14:1 ratio tuning heads, will keep you reliably in tune. It’s comfortable to hold and fun to play, making it a superb choice for beginners. An all-round outstanding offering from Epiphone.
I should know because I own one of these, a 10-year-old Epiphone Hummingbird based on famous Gibson dreadnought design. It’s the type of guitar that you want to sling over your should and take out for some enthusiastic busking. It feels weird to play it while sitting on the couch.
All the guys critisizing the list ranking please get your eyes checked by an eye-specialist. Mr. Klaus just noted 150 greatest guitarists, not rankwise, there might be some more. Brian how many of “your” Jazz guitarists can outplay Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Kark Hammet, Carlos Santana, Michael Angelo Batio??? There are many great jazz guitarists with amazing skill. But dear Brian your favourite jazz genre is much much much less popular than Rock. Take any guitar, amplifier, guitar-fx pedal manufacturer you will find them promoting their product through Rock or Blues guitarists, whyyyy!!! This is 21st century & old is not essencially gold. Be mordern & updated man. Modern Guitar is also about knowing the technical aspects. I don’t think any other genre knows more types of picking, legato, tapping, whammy bar & wah-pedal techniques than Rockers. Dear Eric Clapton haters beware, on top 10 most expensive guitar list you will find 5 of his used guitars!!! I listened to Ayub Bachoo. He is good, but not worth mentioning in this list.
Other techniques, such as axial finger vibrato, pull-offs, hammer-ons, palm muting, harmonics and altered tunings, are also used on the classical and acoustic guitar. Shred guitar is a genre involving a number of extended techniques.

Second hand electric guitars are everywhere, and well worth having a look at. You most likely can name at least ten people you know who have, at one point or another, played guitar. Whether they give up after a month or go on to play for the rest of their lives, they will likely be involved in selling a guitar. This black beauty from ESP’s LTD shows off true rock style and a very playable neck at a price that doesn’t break the bank. The EC-10 features a glossy black well-contoured single-cutaway body made from solid basswood. There’s a bolt-on thin U-shaped maple neck, with a rosewood fretboard, and 24 extra-jumbo frets, which makes fast playing and string bending a breeze. As we highlight in our full review, the EC-10 is voiced by two ESP-designed passive LH-100 humbuckers at the neck and bridge positions, which are loud enough to cope with rock and metal lead playing, although articulate and warm when playing without distortion. Hardware is kept simple, with a tune-o-matic style bridge and stopbar tailpiece, and a single master volume and tone control knob.

Typically, the body is solid (not hollow like an acoustic guitar), although there are some semi-hollow body electric guitars. Tapping, in which both hands are applied to the fretboard. Tapping may be performed either one-handed or two-handed. It is an extended technique, executed by using one hand to tap the strings against the fingerboard, thus producing legato notes. Tapping usually incorporates pull-offs or hammer-ons as well, where the fingers of the left hand play a sequence of notes in synchronization with the tapping hand.

Guitar amplifiers have long included at least a few effect units, often tone controls for bass and treble, an integrated tremolo system (sometimes incorrectly labeled (and marketed) as vibrato), or a mechanical spring reverb unit. In the 2010s, guitar amps often have onboard distortion effects. Some 2010-era amps provide multiple effects, such as chorus, flanger, phaser and octave down effects. The use of offboard effects such as stompbox pedals is made possible by either plugging the guitar into the external effect pedal and then plugging the effect pedal into the amp, or by using one or more effects loops, an arrangement that lets the player switch effects (electrically or mechanically) in or out of the signal path. In the signal chain, the effects loop is typically between the preamplifier stage and the power amplifier stages (though reverb units generally precede the effects loop an amplifier has both). This lets the guitarist add modulation effects to the signal after it passed through the preamplifier—which can be desirable, particularly with time-based effects such as delay. By the 2010s, guitar amplifiers usually included a distortion effect. Effects circuitry (whether internal to an amplifier or not) can be taken as far as amp modeling, by which is meant alteration of the electrical and audible behavior in such a way as to make an amp sound as though it were another (or one of several) amplifiers. When done well, a solid state amplifier can sound like a tube amplifier (even one with power supply sag), reducing the need to manage more than one amp. Some modeling systems even attempt to emulate the sound of different speakers/cabinets. Nearly all amp and speaker cabinet modeling is done digitally, using computer techniques (e.g., Digital Signal Processing or DSP circuitry and software). There is disagreement about whether this approach is musically satisfactory, and also whether this or that unit is more or less successful than another.[22][23]
While music is an art form in itself, playing an instrument such as the guitar has long been a popular subject for painters. One of the more famous examples is the painting Degas’s Father Listening to Lorenzo Pagans Playing the Guitar by Edgar Degas, which was painted sometime between 1869–72 and is currently owned by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.[1]
Of course, this top-down lecturing is all very abstract without examples. Let me give you the worst case scenario. My school talent show, 2008. Two friends of mine performED an ambitious but utterly inappropriate Metallica cover in front of the other students, their parents and the faculty. It was excruciating. Although the solos (presumably the only thing they had bothered to practice) were technically flawless, the whole song was undone by their terrible rhythm. The timing of the song became displaced, the chords were so badly fingered that it was difficult to hear the riff and consequently the whole performance fell apart. They looked like morons. They had sacrificed learning basic rhythm and paid the price. Make sure you don’t do the same.
