The thing I like about your list is that you make an impressive effort to include amazing guitarists from multiple genres. Usually these kind of lists say more about musical tastes of the person who is making the list instead of fairly objective evaluation of skill. I would add Christopher Parkening (classical) and Tommy Tedesco (anything). They said Tommy could play ANYTHING and do it better than anyone. I appreciate your saying the list is not complete. I would suggest removing the numbers and just list the names, as many of your commenters didn’t seem to read your opening qualifiers. LOL.

While the books above will pretty much translate to any style, I can’t help but be biased toward rock electric guitar, since that’s what I’ve played for half my life. Usually that means riffing with the help of a pick. Learning how to fingerpick will serve you well, far outstripping the relatively pedestrian world of flatpicking. Whether you use it to move on to fingerstyle guitar or integrate it into a hybrid technique, mastering the right hand in this finite way will make you a better player. His sound was completely unique among blues guitarists. Sorry to take this a little too seriously, but as a guitarist of 30 years and a guitar aficionado I am in shock at the naivety of this list.
It’s little wonder that Fretboard SE is such a popular guitar book. It focuses on the practical application of learning guitar and relies less on intellectual theory. That is not to say that a guitarist attempting to improve their skills from this book won’t be challenged and introduced to a unique system. It is just to say that the system it introduces is different than you may be used to if you’ve read other books or tried learning guitar from another method. This book teaches around the “CAGED” method. That is, the book will attempt to explain the fretboard layout to you and how to navigate it by focusing on the five basic chord shapes and the root notes in those chords. All the guys critisizing the list ranking please get your eyes checked by an eye-specialist. Mr. Klaus just noted 150 greatest guitarists, not rankwise, there might be some more. Brian how many of “your” Jazz guitarists can outplay Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Kark Hammet, Carlos Santana, Michael Angelo Batio??? There are many great jazz guitarists with amazing skill. But dear Brian your favourite jazz genre is much much much less popular than Rock. Take any guitar, amplifier, guitar-fx pedal manufacturer you will find them promoting their product through Rock or Blues guitarists, whyyyy!!! This is 21st century & old is not essencially gold. Be mordern & updated man. Modern Guitar is also about knowing the technical aspects. I don’t think any other genre knows more types of picking, legato, tapping, whammy bar & wah-pedal techniques than Rockers. Semi-acoustic guitars have a hollow body (similar in depth to a solid-body guitar) and electronic pickups mounted on the body. They work in a similar way to solid-body electric guitars except that, because the hollow body also vibrates, the pickups convert a combination of string and body vibration into an electrical signal. Whereas chambered guitars are made, like solid-body guitars, from a single block of wood, semi-acoustic and full-hollowbody guitars bodies are made from thin sheets of wood. They do not provide enough acoustic volume for live performance, but they can be used unplugged for quiet practice. Semi-acoustics are noted for being able to provide a sweet, plaintive, or funky tone. They are used in many genres, including blues, funk, sixties pop, and indie rock. They generally have cello-style F-shaped sound holes. These can be blocked off to prevent feedback, as in B. B. King’s famous Lucille. Feedback can also be reduced by making them with a solid block in the middle of the soundbox.

The cost of an electric guitar can range from under $100 to several thousands of dollars. There are a multitude of factors that contribute to the cost of electric guitars. The condition of a guitar is probably the most important of those factors. A guitar will not be worth much at all if it is unplayable and in need of serious repair. The age is another important part of determining the electric guitar cost. When the condition of the guitar is nearly perfect, the general rule is that guitar cost rises as the age of the guitar rises. This may not be intuitive, but there is a great demand for well-kept older guitars. The components of the guitar (hardware) make a difference in the guitar cost as well. Guitars with floating bridges (Floyd Rose for example) will usually be more expensive than the same model with a fixed bridge. The quality and quantity of the guitar’s pickups will influence the price. The “machinery” of the guitar includes its metal parts, like the bridge, tuners, and various plates. Machinery can be plated with different metals, altering the cost of the guitar. The construction of the instrument also has an effect on the price. Heavier and more sonically pleasant woods typically add to the cost while necks that are attached to the body in one-piece are often more expensive than those that are bolted on. The aesthetics of the electric guitar, mainly attributed to the paintjob and finish, also affect the guitar cost.
The discussion highlighted a relatively new trend, in an effort to explore the ongoing relevance of acoustic guitars: performers who wouldn’t normally be associated with guitars potentially bringing them onstage. The fascination of rap and hip-hop artists with 1990s alternative guitar-based music was a prime example. This is an amazing list but i think at this point in his career brian haner jr.(synyster gates) from avenged sevenfold should be on there. Not is he only an amazing shredding guitarist for the band but hes super creative along with the whole band. They all get credit for everything its not just one guy in there obviously but as far as guitar goes hes an absolute beast he can play anything from shedding metal solos and riffs to laid back country and jazz and has been around long enough to have deserve it. Bobby Jo is number one on this list. Every artist has unknowingly been influenced by him. Starting in the Mississippi Delta, Johnson’s life is rife with myths, and allegory. His deal with the devil and death are full of folklore and mysticism, and it only adds to his haunting voice and groundbreaking guitar playing. His songs are just a pure expression of emotion with no bars held. He led the groundwork for early blues to be filled in and worked upon by all the artists on this list. He also worked on breaking down social barriers. A black man in the early 20th century was not exactly the best place to be. But his music was to add interest by white musicians and help the civil movements of the sixties. Politically or musically, Robert Johnson is deserving of number one on this list.

Although rare, the one-string guitar is sometimes heard, particularly in Delta blues, where improvised folk instruments were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. Eddie “One String” Jones had some regional success.[citation needed] Mississippi blues musician Lonnie Pitchford played a similar, homemade instrument. In a more contemporary style, Little Willie Joe, the inventor of the Unitar, had a rhythm and blues instrumental hit in the 1950s with “Twitchy”, recorded with the Rene Hall Orchestra.
Quite agree Justin, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban are right up there amongst any guitar players in the world as are many other country pickers from years gone by. Glen Campbell and Jerry Reed were monster guitarists and would wipe the floor with the majority on this list! As for Lennon and McCartney! They shouldn’t even be mentioned let alone be above the Great James Burton!!…Criminal!!!
Guitars for children are typically miniatures of full-scale instruments. The cost of electric guitars for children can be $100 or less new. Electric guitars for beginners can be found for as low as $200. These guitars can pack a lot of value in a small price if you find the right instrument. It’s rarely worth spending more than $500 on a guitar for a beginner. For $1,000 dollars or more, you can have a quality electric guitar that is custom built to your specifications (within reason), and for $5,000 or more, you can access the best of the best in quality vintage guitars.

Compared to an acoustic guitar, which has a hollow body, electric guitars make much less audible sound when their strings are plucked, so electric guitars are normally plugged into a guitar amplifier and speaker. When an electric guitar is played, string movement produces a signal by generating (i.e., inducing) a small electric current in the magnetic pickups, which are magnets wound with coils of very fine wire. The signal passes through the tone and volume circuits to the output jack, and through a cable to an amplifier.[17] The current induced is proportional to such factors as string density and the amount of movement over the pickups.
