I grew up listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan. My oldest brother was a big fan of Stevie and he introduced me to the wonderful world of blues and rock. He did not play guitar himself but he loved listening to guitar players all the time.
The greatest all time innovative guitarist to come out of the UK. Such a distinctive style and sound which is most important. Many guitarists have a similar sound and tone to others. This guy got me hooked on the sound of the guitar from a young age and I have tried to find others in a similar vein to no avail and I own over 2000 rock/metal CD’s and have followed the scene since the mid 80’s. A totally under estimated guitarist in my opinion. Long live The Cult.
A case protects your guitar from excessive humidity, dryness or temperature changes, as well as scratching. Padded fabric gig bags start around $15-$90 for basic bags and run $100-$300 or more for high-quality models. Hardshell cases start around $50-$100, average $100-300 and can run $300-$400 or more. Padded leather bags cost $300-$500 or more.
Let’s get it straight. Froo – Shawn – Tey. If you don’t know him, he’s the lead guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Frusciante is the author of the brilliant chord progression on Under the Bridge, the haunting intro to Californication and the simplistic solo and riff on Otherside. If you’re the casual listener of the Chili Peppers, then you may wonder why John has made it so far up this list. But a tad of a closer look will reveal that his simple catchy riffs are the tip of the ice berg. One can catch a glimpse at his technical skill in the Dani California solo. A bit deeper and you’ll run into Lyon 06.06.06 in one of the B Sides. John takes his influences (Page, Hendrix) and mixes his own nuances into a sound that’s pleasantly different, but melodically having the same effects on you. A track to look out for on his solo work – Ramparts – showcasing four or so guitars layered upon each other in an introspective orchestra.
For new guitar players there are many ways to learn. You could pay for lessons, read books, watch videos, use DVDs and CDs, or do some combination of these methods. Guitar videos for beginners can be very helpful. These videos can teach you the correct technique and show you some easy songs to get started. A guitar tuner is another critical tool for guitar players of all levels. With a guitar tuner, you can ensure that you are playing on key. You may want to buy a guitar stand so you don’t have to put your guitar back in its case every time you play it, but still want to have a secure place to put it.
An electric guitar sounds only as good as the quality of its amplifier. If not included with the guitar, basic amplifiers start around $20-$200, runs $250-$500 for a better quality amp, and can run $1,000-$1,500 or more.
While it won’t necessarily get you to Hendrix levels, it is a useful approach for beginners who want the focus to be on keeping enough fun and practically in practicing guitar. And while you still absolutely have to practice, this method shows tips and tricks up front to keep learning theory fun. It will also include enough information around traditional arpeggios, tunings, and scales to make sure you will learn music theory.
Some solid-bodied guitars, such as the Gibson Les Paul Supreme, the PRS Singlecut or the Fender Telecaster Thinline, among others, are built with hollows in the body. These hollows are designed specifically not to interfere with the critical bridge and string anchor point on the solid body. The motivation for this can be to reduce weight, to achieve a semi-hollow tone, or both.
All the guys critisizing the list ranking please get your eyes checked by an eye-specialist. Mr. Klaus just noted 150 greatest guitarists, not rankwise, there might be some more. Brian how many of “your” Jazz guitarists can outplay Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Kark Hammet, Carlos Santana, Michael Angelo Batio??? There are many great jazz guitarists with amazing skill. But dear Brian your favourite jazz genre is much much much less popular than Rock. Take any guitar, amplifier, guitar-fx pedal manufacturer you will find them promoting their product through Rock or Blues guitarists, whyyyy!!! This is 21st century & old is not essencially gold. Be mordern & updated man. Modern Guitar is also about knowing the technical aspects. I don’t think any other genre knows more types of picking, legato, tapping, whammy bar & wah-pedal techniques than Rockers. Dear Eric Clapton haters beware, on top 10 most expensive guitar list you will find 5 of his used guitars!!! I listened to Ayub Bachoo. He is good, but not worth mentioning in this list.
The lesson curriculum is not really my style, but all teachers vary. It focuses too soon on too much theory, and I believe in getting my students playing and having fun, thereby develop a love for the instrument quickly, rather than indulging in theoretical studies.
The > symbol is called an accent. It tells you to play those notes a little louder than the others. This forms a rhythmic pattern that gives a song a certain flavor, such as a Latin flavor, a Bo Diddley flavor, a polka flavor, or even a tutti-frutti flavor.
27 Kirk Hammett Kirk Lee Hammett is the lead guitarist and songwriter for the heavy metal band Metallica and has been a member of the band since 1983. Before joining Metallica he formed and named the band Exodus.
Second only to the Strat in electric guitar terms is the famous Les Paul shape. Introduced by Gibson in the 1950s, the Les Paul offers a slightly different playing experience on account of it usually being constructed from mahogany, which provides a warmer tone which rings out for longer. Les Pauls usually feature two humbucker pickups, which add extra girth and roundness to your tone and make them ideally suited to players looking for something a little bit heavier. Plenty of other manufacturers offer variations on the Les Paul theme, and there’s even a Gibson-affiliated range from Epiphone, so if it’s a Les Paul you’re after then there’s plenty to choose from.
Eric Johnson is one of the most respected guitar virtuosos in the world. He has a fast, slick style and a brilliant tone. In the late eighties and nineties, Johnson took blues and jazz influences and catapulted them into the next world. And not many guitarists can top ‘Cliffs of Dover’. – Floods

An excerpt: “No amount of tuning will suffice if your guitar is not intonated properly. Intonation at the nut is best left to the hands of your local repairman, but bridge intonation in most cases is a do-it-yourself job.”

Maybe one is looking to channel their inner Clapton or Gilmour, or maybe their kid has decided that rock ‘n’ roll fame is the only acceptable outcome of his or her life, either way it may be time to look…

  1. As for necks, the majority of guitars will have either a maple or mahogany neck, with a rosewood, maple or ebony fretboard. Again, there’s no right or wrong, and a neck wood is never going to sway your decision. But you should choose something that feels smooth and comfortable to play. There are a variety of shapes and profiles, and what you go for will depend on personal preference and playing style. For example, a modern C-shaped neck is always a safe choice as the majority of guitarists will feel comfortable using it, while a thin U-shape is great for faster players (think punk rock and metal).
Though it gained immense popularity during the rock ‘n’ roll days of the 1950s and 1960s, the electric guitar was invented in 1931. The need for the amplified guitar became apparent during the Big Band Era as orchestras increased in size, particularly when guitars had to compete with large brass sections. The first electric guitars used in jazz were hollow archtop acoustic guitar bodies with electromagnetic transducers. By 1932, an electrically amplified guitar was commercially available. Early electric guitar manufacturers include Rickenbacker in 1932, Dobro in 1933, National, Epiphone and Gibson in 1935 and many others by 1936.
You’re right, guitar playing is not about competition. I made the list for fun, to inspire people to listen to great guitar players. And for people to comment to the list and add their personal favorites.

If you are a beginner then you probably don’t know what a ‘floating tremolo’ is. Have a look at Floyd Rose, who made the first models. If you are looking at a guitar that has little tuners on the bridge, then it’s probably a floating tremolo. For a beginner they are a total pain in the butt. They are very hard to tune and a real pain to change strings. The cheaper ones go out of tune a lot too. If you know why you want one, then fine, but locking tremolos on budget instruments are usually rubbish, so stay clear of those for now!
This is an amazing list but i think at this point in his career brian haner jr.(synyster gates) from avenged sevenfold should be on there. Not is he only an amazing shredding guitarist for the band but hes super creative along with the whole band. They all get credit for everything its not just one guy in there obviously but as far as guitar goes hes an absolute beast he can play anything from shedding metal solos and riffs to laid back country and jazz and has been around long enough to have deserve it. Same with jacky vincent from falling in reverse. His playing skill is amazing. Bands like that get over looked for the talent tho. But with music with no prejudice, hes an absolute player too.
Here we have another awesome guitar from Epiphone, based on the 1967 version of the iconic Gibson SG. This ‘67 SG has the authentic asymmetrical double-cutaway shape you’d expect, with a mahogany body and a SlimTaper D-shaped bolt-on mahogany neck, with rosewood fretboard and 22 frets. It looks great, and feels comfortable and well-balanced to hold. The G-310, as we explain in our full review, is fitted with two Epiphone open-coil alnico humbuckers at the bridge and neck, which deliver plenty of warmth and tone to deal with both classic and modern styles. It also features LockTone tuners and a tune-o-matic bridge, with stopbar tailpiece, for good tuning stability. In all, it’s a great modern version of a true classic.

Dean make some epic rock-fueled electric guitars in all kinds of price range, but their popular Vendetta XM is a real beauty in the beginner’s market. Playability on beginner models is key, and the XM impresses with its sturdy, fast-playing bolt-on maple neck, that’s fitted with a rosewood fretboard and 24 very accessible frets. There’s a sleek double-cutaway body, which is finished in a range of natural color choices, made from solid paulownia – a popular mahogany substitute that keeps the costs down. Don’t forget the cool Dean headstock! The XM is voiced with two Dean humbuckers, delivering a clear and acceptably beefy rock tone when played with some distortion. There’s more on the Dean Vendetta XM in the full review.
On guitar, the note patterns are a little more complex because each string has a different arrangement of notes. For a beginner, it is much more difficult to know which string to use when the pitch goes higher or lower. Unlike a piano, the guitar needs to be tuned before you play, which is another learning curve students must conquer quickly. Otherwise, they will only be able to tune once a week when they see their guitar teacher.
An excerpt: “Although presumably the easiest of guitar techniques, it’s amazing how many guitarists neglect basic chord strumming. A strong command of strumming is probably the most important skill you can develop in acoustic guitar playing, especially if you intend to accompany yourself or someone else singing.”
An electric lap steel guitar, also called a Hawaiian guitar, rests flat on the lap or on a stand, and may include floor pedals or knee levers for changing the tuning of the strings while the guitar is being played. In addition to Hawaiian music, steel guitars are used in country western and blues. Most modern steel guitars are electric rather than acoustic. They start around $75-$150, can run $200-$500 and go as high as $1,000-$3,500 or more for custom models.
