No! There’s no reason advanced players couldn’t enjoy using them either – especially with the performance that some of them offer. As they are so affordable, I wouldn’t bet against experienced players fancying a couple to add to their collections.

Unlike acoustic guitars, solid-body electric guitars have no vibrating soundboard to amplify string vibration. Instead, solid-body instruments depend on electric pickups and an amplifier (or amp) and speaker. The solid body ensures that the amplified sound reproduces the string vibration alone, thus avoiding the wolf tones and unwanted feedback associated with amplified acoustic guitars. About 30 years ago, a fellow co-worker began teaching me how to play electric guitar. I believe it was an Aria Pro Strat. He had been playing for 20 plus years at this time and was a very good teacher, he owned a 1958 Les Paul. I have not played since he was in a car wreck in 1990 as he could not return to work. He was however able to continue to play, its just our schedules never allowed the time to take lessons. He passed away in 2011, and since I retired last year, I’d like to take up lessons. With expiration of the Fender patent on the Stratocaster-style vibrato, various improvements on this type of internal, multi-spring vibrato system are now available. Floyd Rose introduced one of the first improvements on the vibrato system in many years when, in the late 1970s, he experimented with “locking” nuts and bridges that prevent the guitar from losing tuning, even under heavy vibrato bar use.
I keep coming back to this point because it’s absolutely essential: learn how to solo over chords. I don’t mean simple chord arpeggiating, even though that has its place, too. If you can follow the chord changes with smooth, soulful playing, you will never be fenced in. You can drop into any style, any band, and any situation. Most of us get stuck playing a given scale pattern for years before something shakes us up. Make this the foundation of your learning with this book. This list included 100 guitarists whom the magazine editor David Fricke considered the best, with a brief introduction for each of them.[2] The first in this list is the American guitarist Jimi Hendrix introduced by Pete Townshend, guitarist for The Who, who was, in his turn, ranked at #50 in the list.

Start with some of the most important chords first and you will be able to see millions of songs playing these chords.

Rich manufactured a ten-string six-course electric guitar, the Bich, whose radical shape positioned the machine heads for the four secondary strings onto the body, avoiding the head-heaviness of many electric twelve-string guitars. However, many players bought it for the body shape or electrics and simply removed the extra strings. The company recognized this and released six-string models of the Bich, a shape now generally incorporated into their standard Warlock.
Others I like but not my favorites are “Smoke on the Water”, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Reelin In the Years”, “Crazy Train”, “Johnny B. Goode”, “Enter Sandman”, “Back in Black”. Others can list Guns N Roses, Jimmy Hendrix, More AC/DC, and lots that I’m not thinking about.
The frets are those thin metal bars running down the neck, which act as note separators, allowing you to play individual notes and chords. Most guitars will feature 22 frets, although those more rock and metal-inclined will sometimes offer 24, allowing you to reach higher notes. As a beginner it shouldn’t really bother you whether you have 21, 22, or 24 frets. It’s only as you grow into the instrument you’ll find what works best for you.

Bring back teaching music theory and harmony to the public school system. I spent my money on music school only to learn what the so called best guitarist never knew how to do. Now what? Mr. Q public votes for the best on things they know nothing about.

Obviously it’s difficult to have a list that caters to everyones personal taste… and it’s also difficult to tell on exactly what makes a ‘great’ guitarist (technical ability? songwriting prowess?) … but to have Kurt Cobain to appear higher up the list than Nuno, Dimebag, Hammett, Satriani and Vai…. I’m a little confused. Still, some great names in there. Good on ya bro 🙂
I really don’t think you should spend less than about £250 ($400) because you will end up with something hard to play, and you probably won’t enjoy playing! At the cheaper end, both Yamaha and Fender make very good budget acoustic guitars. Lately I have played a lot of cheap Yamahas that were good; they are mass-produced, but mass-produced well. 
The thing I like about your list is that you make an impressive effort to include amazing guitarists from multiple genres. Usually these kind of lists say more about musical tastes of the person who is making the list instead of fairly objective evaluation of skill. I would add Christopher Parkening (classical) and Tommy Tedesco (anything). They said Tommy could play ANYTHING and do it better than anyone. I appreciate your saying the list is not complete. I would suggest removing the numbers and just list the names, as many of your commenters didn’t seem to read your opening qualifiers. LOL.
Double-coil or “humbucker” pickups were invented as a way to reduce or counter the unwanted ambient hum sounds (known as 60-cycle hum). Humbuckers have two coils of opposite magnetic and electric polarity to produce a differential signal. Electromagnetic noise that hits both coils equally tries to drive the pickup signal toward positive on one coil and toward negative on the other, which cancels out the noise. The two coils are wired in phase, so their signal adds together. This high combined inductance of the two coils leads to the richer, “fatter” tone associated with humbucking pickups.
After reviewing the Les Paul Special II, it was clear that it was the guitar to beat. Cut to the classic Les Paul shape, it features both a solid mahogany body and a bolt-on SlimTaper D-shaped mahogany neck, which is home to a rosewood fretboard and 22 frets. The sound comes from an Epiphone-designed 650R humbucker at the neck and 700T humbucker at the bridge, giving ample Les Paul tone, while a 3-way pickup selector switch, along with individual volume and tone controls, give you some versatility in tone. One of the first solid-body guitars was invented by Les Paul, though Gibson did not present their Les Paul guitar prototypes to the public as they did not believe it would catch on.
