I recently saw this guitar player and he has truly been I guess hiding because he makes a lot of the names on your list look bad. His name is Tobi Hero. More people need to check this dude out. Help him if you can because he is something else.
An excerpt: “First let us dispel the popular, but completely wrong belief that ‘any guitar will do for learning to play.’ Your first guitar should be carefully chosen to be fairly easy to play and tune. It should also be versatile enough for you to be able to play different kinds of music on it. For this reason, and to avoid the complications and expense of an amplifier, an ‘acoustic’ (un-amplified) guitar is recommended.”
Beginner’s Guide to Electric Guitar is all you need to start playing electric guitar. With an easy-to-understand and down-to-earth tone, this book gets to the important stuff first and doesn’t bog you down with all the details. Learn all about the different types of electric guitars, amplifiers, and effects, and learn how to play like Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Green Day, Metallica, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Alice in Chains, and more. To keep things simple, the music examples are written in TAB only and are designed to get you playing quickly—from riffs on a single string to power chords, pentatonic scales, and tunes in drop-D tuning. The accompanying CD features a full band to play along with.
FINALLY………A decenct list of great guitarists……Sick of seeing Brian May and Eddie Van Halen at the top of theses lists!!!! The Blues Musicians are the the masters but seem to get left off most lists because they are not very well known!!! Great list although bit concerned abour Duane Allmans position!!! Surely the greatest slide guitarist of all time??? Should be top ten…
So this book is a great way to keep on top of practicing valuable techniques to build a very solid foundation over the course of a year. What this book is not good for is licks or detailed instruction about technique. It is much more focused on giving you a set schedule and practice regime that will build your skills. For people who get distracted and are unsure of what to practice in order to maximize their time and improve their skills, this book is a good way to remain focused and build a valuable skill set while learning guitar.
The final stages of on-board sound-shaping circuitry are the volume control (potentiometer) and tone control (a low-pass filter which “rolls off” the treble frequencies). Where there are individual volume controls for different pickups, and where pickup signals can be combined, they would affect the timbre of the final sound by adjusting the balance between pickups from a straight 50:50.
Ultimately your style and musical tastes will define the best kind of affordable guitar to go for. For example, if classic rock n’ roll is your thing, a Squier Telecaster will definitely suit you, whereas if metal is your passion, a Warlock from B.C. Rich will be worth checking out.
Brian should be much higher on this list! He is a Musical Genius! I never listened to guitarists until I heard Brian May play! Everything he does is PERFECTIOIN! Put him at the Top 5 where he belongs!

I know you state your list is in no particular order, and that’s fair. But everyone assumes you are making him the best of all time, which is plain silly. There were shredders before he was even born that would set a fretboard on fire – and not with lighter fluid, but with their fingers!
Woods typically used in solid-body electric guitars include alder (brighter, but well rounded), swamp ash (similar to alder, but with more pronounced highs and lows), mahogany (dark, bassy, warm), poplar (similar to alder), and basswood (very neutral).[14] Maple, a very bright tonewood,[14] is also a popular body wood, but is very heavy. For this reason it is often placed as a “cap” on a guitar made primarily of another wood. Cheaper guitars are often made of cheaper woods, such as plywood, pine or agathis—not true hardwoods—which can affect durability and tone. Though most guitars are made of wood, any material may be used. Materials such as plastic, metal, and even cardboard have been used in some instruments.
The “learn guitar books” (both acoustic and electric) are here to stay, since thousands of guitar lesson books are being sold everyday, so I thought I would buy, read and compare a couple of these books and see how they perform.
Use your 1st, 3rd and 4th fingers as shown, and start by putting your 1st finger in the 3rd fret of the sixth string (the note G). Then put down your 3rd and 4th fingers. If this is a bit of stretch, don’t worry, you will soon limber up! Try to keep them together, the 3rd finger kind of on top of the 4th as shown.
This tome, which claims to have taught more than a half-million people to play guitar, debuted in 1979. Refreshingly, it assumes you know nothing about guitar and starts at the very beginning. There’s no flowery prose, just simple, straightforward advice.
As musicians, we have a staggering amount of information available to us that can help us hone our craft. The hard part is deciding which resources are valuable and which resources aren’t. We’ve all ordered a book off of Amazon that we thought was going to take our playing to the next level only to find out that we could have gotten just as much out of a five minute Google search. Well, not all books are created equal, and you’ve probably not been looking at the right ones.
If the chord chart is depicting frets higher than the fourth fret, the top line on the chart will not be bolded (or doubled) and fret numbers will be shown, either to the left of the sixth string or to the right of the first string, to help orient you on the fretboard.

So…I’m violist and I teach violin and viola professionally. I know my music theory and I’m having a hell of a time transferring that knowledge to the guitar. I’ve tried the Hal Leonard book and like you said..it is ass-numbingly dull.

The biggest issue when starting out is not to get any bad habits with picking or hand/finger positioning. I’d highly recommend to find a teacher who – not necessarily on a periodical basis – would take a closer look at your progress and technique and make adjustments when needed. There are lots of bad habits that you can get and I’d rather spend some money on lessons than weeks of lifetime to undo those.
Very cheap acoustics are usually not such a great idea. Often their sound quality is poor and they are hard to play. I often see students selling them after a six-month struggle (if they managed to stick with it that long!). So if your budget is very tight, I would not get an acoustic. You may think you save a little because you don’t need to buy an amplifier as well, but as I said before you don’t have to use an amplifier to practise anyway.
Several magazines and websites have compiled what they intend as lists of the greatest guitarists—for example The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine, or 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Guitar World magazine.
Great guitarists are everywhere in this world… The list will never end if we start to mention. In my country (Indonesia), we also have many good guitarists: Lianto Tjahjoputro, Balawan, Dewa Budjana and many others… China has Xue Fei Yang…. Perhaps, in Asia, the chance to be worldwide recognised is a bit smaller due to several factors.
New to this chart is Squier’s affordable Affinity Jazzmaster, which marries the classic Jazzmaster/Jaguar body shape with superb playability and stripped-down electronics to deliver an ideal guitar for beginners. Sporting the ultra-accessible body shape (made of solid alder), the highlight is the 22-fret C-shaped maple neck which is a real joy to play. It looks great, with that vintage-inspired ’68 headstock, and sounds pretty good too – a little heavier than expected, thanks to the surprisingly hot humbuckers. The traditional switching system is gone, leaving behind simple beginner-friendly controls – master volume, tone and a three-way switch. It’s a breath of fresh air for beginners wanting something different – as we mention in the complete Squier Affinity Jazzmaster review [INSERT LINK to Full Review].

Some solid-bodied guitars, such as the Gibson Les Paul Supreme, the PRS Singlecut, and the Fender Telecaster Thinline, among others, are built with hollows in the body. These hollows are designed specifically not to interfere with the critical bridge and string anchor point on the solid body. In the case of Gibson and PRS, these are called chambered bodies. The motivation for this may be to reduce weight, to achieve a semi-acoustic tone (see below) or both.[29][30][31]
An excerpt: “Like Coca-Cola, Levi’s, or Harley Davidson, Gibson has transcended mere brand-name status to become a presence in life. It seems like Gibson has just always been there; and for all practical musical purposes, that’s true.”

Reading chords is quite simple because of the diagram and some numbers wherein you know what the numbers of your fingers are. With that idea in mind you should learn how to read chord. Start with some of the most important chords first and you will be able to see millions of songs playing these chords.
Jazz guitar playing styles include rhythm guitar-style “comping” (accompanying) with jazz chord voicings (and in some cases, walking basslines) and “blowing” (improvising solos) over jazz chord progressions with jazz-style phrasing and ornaments. The accompanying style for electric guitar in most jazz styles differs from the way chordal instruments accompany in many popular styles of music. In rock and pop, the rhythm guitarist typically performs chords in dense and regular fashion to define a tune’s rhythm. Simpler music tends to use chord voicings focused on the first, third, and fifth notes of the chord. In contrast, more complex music styles of pop might intermingle periodic chords and delicate voicings into pauses in the melody or solo. Complex guitar chord voicings are often have no root, especially in chords that have more than six notes. Such chords typically emphasize the third and seventh notes of the chord. These chords also often include the 9th, 11th and 13th notes of the chord, which are called extensions, or color notes.

If you were to ask all of the guitarists on the top 20, Jeff beck would be crowned number one. His technique and tone is like no other. He makes the guitar sing and was the first to ever be in that realm.
Klaus its pleasing to see that you’ve included Rory Gallagher, he quite frequently gets ignored because he shunned commercialism to stay true to guitar playing. Admittedly I’m biased, Rory was related to me but I had the pleasure to meet and talk to him a few times and his down to earth personality was a credit.
Following the death of Les Paul, TIME website presented their list of 10 greatest artists in electric guitar. As in Rolling Stone magazine’s list, Jimi Hendrix was chosen as the greatest guitarist followed by Slash from Guns ‘N’ Roses, B.B. King, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, and Eric Clapton.[11] Gigwise.com, an online music magazine, also ranks Jimi Hendrix as the greatest guitarist ever, followed by Jimmy Page, B.B. King, Keith Richards and Kirk Hammett.[12]

If the Complete Technique book is good for quick starts, this would be the bullet train. Another Hal Leonard selection, this is a trim 48 pages for teaching you how to hold a guitar for the first time. Tuning up, easy chords, and strumming. If you got a guitar on Friday, use this to put together your first three-chord jam by Monday. Will it sound good? No, no, it will not. But you’ll have started, which is key. Some of the other books on this list are dense with both concepts and pages, which might delay your starting. Don’t let that happen.
Not only can he make amazing guitar riffs, he can play so many other instruments! He revolutionized Punk in his era and still is. Not only with a pretty face and a voice to go with it, but his guitar trumps all.
A strong guide for those learning their way around an acoustic guitar, this book will teach you to play popular songs like “Angie,” “Barely Breathing,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” “Building a Mystery,” “Change the World,” “Dust in the Wind,” “Fast Car,” “Here Comes the Sun,” “Jack and Diane,” “Landslide,” “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” “Maggie May,” “More Than Words,” “Name,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Yesterday,” and others.
Shouldn’t even be questioned. Ever hear of ‘Voodoo Child’? Yeah, that was recorded in one take. & almost entirely improvised. & it’s the greatest recording of an electric guitar being played EVER. & this isn’t from some idiot who just listens to a lot of music, I play the guitar and have done a lot of reading and I know a few of your favorite guitarists would agree with me.

Should be higher, and I wish he was. Pink Floyd are my favourite band, and David Gilmour’s guitar solos can be matched by few, if any. Gilmour is famous for his bluesy, slow style that puts the emphasis on phrasing rather than technique. – Floods
When a new electric guitar costs $1,000 or more, it can usually be regarded as high quality. These guitars tend to feature advanced bridges, select woods, attractive hardware and elaborate paint jobs. High-quality electric guitar cost can be as expensive as $5,000 dollars or more. Guitars with special electronics (such as a MIDI adapter for effects) can command similar prices.
Unless your goal is to play classical or acoustic music, most experts recommend starting with an electric guitar because it has lighter strings and can be easier to play than an acoustic. Guitar enthusiast Ben Newbold compares the pros and cons of acoustic and electric guitars[3] and explains how to care for your instrument[4] .

  1. Play a lot of different guitars before buying. Even if you don’t know how to play, hold it and see how it feels. Examine the construction and finish for any scratches, gaps, blemishes or other problems. Be sure you’re playing with the amplifier that will be sold with the guitar. GuitarsForBeginners.com outlines things to consider when buying a guitar[5] and Musician’sFriend.com offers an electric guitar buying guide[6] .
You will see this type of notation a lot across the internet, because it’s a lot easier and faster than creating a chord diagram. The only downside is you won’t able to see which finger (index, middle, ring or pinky) exactly needs to press down on the string, but for most intermediate guitar players this is not an issue.
Electric guitars are physically somewhat easier to play, assuming they are properly adjusted, because they have a smaller body, thinner neck, and use lighter gauge strings. The pickups and amplifier do all the work of projecting the sound, so a lighter touch along with lighter strings makes it easier to play. An electric guitar needs to be plugged into an amplifier, which must be turned on before playing. For some, the extra effort that it takes to plug into an amplifier and turn it on may be enough to keep them from playing as often or taking advantage of a spontaneous moment to pick it up and play.

Finally, have you ever heard a definitive answer to the question “how long does it take to learn guitar?” Us neither! Learning your first chords can take a few hours, but the instrument can take a lifetime to master. But that’s the joy of playing guitar – you never stop learning. It’s down to you to practise and progress, because practise makes perfect!
What’s the perfect electric guitar for you? For many experienced players, that answer changes with the song and their mood. If you’re unsure where to start, find inspiration in your favorite music. Even the greatest guitar players of all time have idols and influences. As you progress as a player, you’ll find a style and tone that’s all your own.
The chord below (an Am) is going to be used for demonstration. Firstly, you’ll notice the name of the chord labeled up the top. Next you’ll see a “grid” below it. This grid represents your guitar fretboard. The 6 lines running downwards represent the six strings on your guitar with the fattest and lowest sounding string on the left hand side. The horizontal lines represent the frets on your guitar neck. The top line is the top of the neck.
