Getting your guitar action set up by a good luthier can make a huge difference to your guitar’s playability (you’ll usually find someone at your local store). I have a number of private students that found an AMAZING difference when they had set their guitar up correctly, and of course I get all mine done too. If you are struggling to play barre chords on an acoustic guitar, then a too-high action could certainly be a part of the problem.
I don’t write what I write lightly, and the above article is based on my experience with the majority of my students. Lots have tried to learn though books, and failed. You can’t learn music by reading about is.
If the Complete Technique book is good for quick starts, this would be the bullet train. Another Hal Leonard selection, this is a trim 48 pages for teaching you how to hold a guitar for the first time. Tuning up, easy chords, and strumming. If you got a guitar on Friday, use this to put together your first three-chord jam by Monday. Will it sound good? No, no, it will not. But you’ll have started, which is key. Some of the other books on this list are dense with both concepts and pages, which might delay your starting. Don’t let that happen.
What the hell? Jimmy Hendrix #1? Above Les Paul, above Buddy Guy who Hendrix worshiped. And what the hell with Angus Young above Mark Knopfler, really? Chet Atkins is way to far down the list and you left Roy Clark off the list completely, unbelievable. Wait, you left off Jose Feliciano and Carlos Montoya too? And the fact that you have that low talent bum Slash listed above anyone is beyond unforgivable. I cannot even write straight, I am in such amazing dismay about the patheticness of this list. Frankly almost all the jazz guitarists can outplay the rock guitarists. Jim Hall, Joe Pass, all better than Slash could be in his wettest dream. Where is John Lee Hooker? His sound was completely unique among blues guitarists. Sorry to take this a little too seriously, but as a guitarist of 30 years and a guitar aficionado I am in shock at the naivety of this list.
An excerpt: “The Dobro brand name has been identified with resonator guitars since 1929 and is currently owned by Gibson Guitar Corporation. Despite its registered trademark status, the Dobro name has at times been used generically to refer to woodbodied instruments with 1) an aluminum cone or “resonator” mounted so that the cone opens toward the top of the instrument and 2) an 8-armed spider assembly supporting the bridge.”
After that, I don’t really care. But any person with an actual brain for music knows that Slash, Jimi and Stevie need to be at the top of the list. Come on. Syn is the best of the modern guitar players. That’s why he should be 4th, behind the greats.
ON! The Beginnings of Electric Sound Generation – an exhibit at the Museum of Making Music, National Association of Music Merchants, Carlsbad, CA – some of the earliest electric guitars and their history, from the collection of Lynn Wheelwright and others
Piezoelectric pickups use a “sandwich” of quartz crystal or other piezoelectric material, typically placed beneath the string saddles or nut. These devices respond to pressure changes from all vibration at these specific points.
8 David Gilmour David Jon Gilmour is an English singer, songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. He joined the progressive rock band Pink Floyd as guitarist and co-lead vocalist in 1968.
Volume swell, in which the volume knob is repeatedly rolled to create a violin-like sound. The same result can also be accomplished through the use of an external swell pedal, although the knob technique can enhance showmanship and conveniently eliminate the need for another pedal.
The “learn guitar books” (both acoustic and electric) are here to stay, since thousands of guitar lesson books are being sold everyday, so I thought I would buy, read and compare a couple of these books and see how they perform.
Admit it. You’ve slow danced to Stairway To Heaven before. Page’s playing have influenced so many guitar players of today, and Led Zeppelin revolutionized Rock and Roll blending acoustic guitars, banjos, and mandolins while still staying with the same gritty rock image. His guitar riffs are forever etched into Rock and Roll’s hall of fame. How influential was he? Step into a guitar store, and you’ll see. Thousands of 12 year old kids across the globe are playing the intro to Stairway. Now that’s how you know you’ve made it.
Yngwie Malmsteen released his Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in 1998, and Steve Vai released a double-live CD entitled Sound Theories, of his work with the Netherlands Metropole Orchestra in June 2007. The American composers Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca have written “symphonic” works for large ensembles of electric guitars, in some cases numbering up to 100 players, and the instrument is a core member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars (played by Mark Stewart). Still, like many electric and electronic instruments, the electric guitar remains primarily associated with rock and jazz music, rather than with classical compositions and performances. R. Prasanna plays a style of Indian classical music (Carnatic music) on the electric guitar.
Chords are massive. There are tons of songs that are based on a chord. In a lot of songs, usually, it only uses three chords in the entire song which is quiet amazing. Next thing we will be learning is a lot of songs that will be using some chords.
If the book had been proofread better, I’d give it 5 stars. For example, there are places where the text has both a fret number and standard musical notation, and the fret number is wrong. The book refers you to play along with the instructional CD backing tracks, but it doesn’t tell you which track number to play. It’s easy enough to figure out what was meant, but a little more care would have been better.
Together with Eric Clapton and Rory Gallagher these guys are responsible for that I’m a guitar player (and also teacher) since over 30 years. Thanks for mentioning Rory. We never, never should forget him. He was a genius!
Many of us learned listening to him and Dickey. There’s never been anyone like him since. He is unique and sorely missed by all of the folks for that era and anyone else that has listened to him play.
The most technical electric guitarist…ever. Steve Vai may not be as flash as the likes of John Petrucci and Paul Gilbert, but when he does go flat-out, he’s untouchable. Vai has mastered every technique imaginable, but still has soul. ‘Passion and Warfare’ and ‘The Ultra Zone’ are must haves. – Floods
Ultimately your style and musical tastes will define the best kind of affordable guitar to go for. For example, if classic rock n’ roll is your thing, a Squier Telecaster will definitely suit you, whereas if metal is your passion, a Warlock from B.C. Rich will be worth checking out.
By early-mid 1935, Electro String Instrument Corporation had achieved mainstream success with the A-22 “Frying Pan” steel guitar, and set out to capture a new audience through its release of the Electro-Spanish Model B and the Electro-Spanish Ken Roberts, which was the first full 25″ scale electric guitar produced. The Electro-Spanish Ken Roberts provided players a full 25″ scale, with 17 frets free of the fretboard. It is estimated that fewer than 50 Electro-Spanish Ken Roberts were constructed between 1933 and 1937; fewer than 10 are known to survive today.
You could say that the book does what it promises, presents the beginner guitarist with an introduction to the guitar. It is aimed at complete beginners, and stops at the beginner level. It does not include any even remotely complex theoretical lessons.
Yes I know Jimi Hendrix pioneered the guitar solo but Eddie Van Halen was probably influenced by Jimi Hendrix but now Eddie Van Halen now influenced Kerry King and so many more people so I think Eddie should get more credit for his inspiration to other artists.
So unless you live somewhere where it gets REALLY hot or REALLY cold, then you’re probably be ok if you use your head. Leaving an acoustic guitar in the hot sun for a whole day will probably ruin it, leaving it out in the snow might not be too good either!
31 Billie Joe Armstrong Billie Joe Armstrong is an American musician, singer, songwriter and actor who is best known as the lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and guitarist of the punk rock band Green Day, which he co-founded with Mike Dirnt.
The lesson curriculum is not really my style, but all teachers vary. It focuses too soon on too much theory, and I believe in getting my students playing and having fun, thereby develop a love for the instrument quickly, rather than indulging in theoretical studies.

Another topic- Top Guitar song intros. Talk about a long list. Here are some: Keith Richards in “Gimme Shelter”. Many John Fogerty songs. Steve Morse “Cruise Missle”, Van Halen “Ain’t Talkin about Love”, “Whole Lotta Love”, “The Song Remains the Same”, “You Shook Me All Night Long”
