As a piano teacher, there’s is naturally going to be some bias here. But after so many years working at Elite Music Academy, I’ve been asked hundreds of times about piano vs guitar lessons for a beginner. In short, I believe the piano is easier to start with especially for young kids and adults with little time or patience. Aside from that, there are many pros and cons to learning each instrument first, and it boils down to which sounds the most appealing how hard the student is willing to practice.
Number 1 is the index finger, 2 is the middle finger, 3 is the ring finger, and 4 is your pinky. You don’t use the thumb to fret, except in certain unusual circumstances. In those cases there would be a “T” inside the black dot.
The best word to describe the California Series could be “extroverted.” At the event, Fender convened a panel to discuss the state of the guitar, moderated by Matt Sweeney (he of the recent Iggy Pop-Josh Homme band and YouTube’s delightful “Guitar Moves” fame) with Mooney, several music writers and executives, and artist-producer Doc Mckinney alongside Gina Gleason, who plays lead guitar for the band Baroness.

Often people want to know what kind of guitar is easier to play. There are physical differences between electric and acoustic guitars that may be considered. However, we believe the kind of guitar you “want” to play is the easiest to learn on, as you will be more likely to establish good practice habits early in the process.
Eddie is #1, or at least tied with Hendrix, who relies on reputation alone. Bon jovi’s guitarist is a joke. For some reason, people (who have no idea what they are talking about) think Bon jovi is better than all of the other 80s bands that have solid guitar players that aren’t on the list that are better in many ways, specifically the guitar. (definitely leppard, Guns N’ Roses, Ratt, motley crue, etc.) Anyway Eddie Van Halens self taught style is the best that there is. This list is more of a popularity contest, a popularity contest where people who have no idea what they are talking about vote for the band they have heard 1 or 2 songs from. The electric guitar was played by many, for all those who can’t get on the radio and name the band that is playing most of the time, better yet the album, shouldn’t be voting. But if you can, vote whoever.
So…I’m violist and I teach violin and viola professionally. I know my music theory and I’m having a hell of a time transferring that knowledge to the guitar. I’ve tried the Hal Leonard book and like you said..it is ass-numbingly dull.
Much later I began listening to pretty much the rest of the list presented below. Listening to all these guitar players enriched my playing and my life as a musician and music lover. I hope it does the same for you.

Guitar amplifier design uses a different approach than sound reinforcement system power amplifiers and home “hi-fi” stereo systems. Audio amplifiers generally are intended to accurately reproduce the source signal without adding unwanted tonal coloration (i.e., they have a flat frequency response) or unwanted distortion. In contrast, most guitar amplifiers provide tonal coloration and overdrive or distortion of various types. A common tonal coloration sought by guitarists is rolling off some of the high frequencies. Along with a guitarist’s playing style and choice of electric guitar and pickups, the choice of guitar amp model is a key part of a guitarist’s unique tone. Many top guitarists are associated with a specific brand of guitar amp. As well, electric guitarists in blues, rock and many related sub-genres often intentionally choose amplifiers or effects units with controls that distort or alter the sound (to a greater or lesser degree).

Now, you have your first electric guitar and it’s set up nicely. The next thing you ask is “what is the best way to learn guitar?” And the answer is simple – get some lessons! Whether it’s from your local pro, guitar teacher, or from a range of excellent online courses, lessons will teach you the basics – allowing you to start playing songs within a couple of hours.

There are even boards now for each specific instrument, so it’s easy to get the advice you need. They are not solely aimed at beginners, but there is lots of advice from experienced players and I’m sure you’ll get plenty of advice here from other GAS sufferers 🙂
It is possible to make power chords on other string groups too, but in normal playing you will only use root 6 and root 5 because they sound deep and powerful. The others are a lot less common and don’t tend to sound as good.
We think the reason this book is so good is because of its readability. That is, it starts very slowly in theory, and Tom does an excellent job of explaining the constructs of music theory in simple and understandable terms. From there, the concepts are set up in such a way that is easy to follow and very thorough. Mr. Kolb did a great job of laying out the sequence of the topics to make them understandable to someone picking up a guide to music theory for the first time.

The greatest all time innovative guitarist to come out of the UK. Such a distinctive style and sound which is most important. Many guitarists have a similar sound and tone to others. This guy got me hooked on the sound of the guitar from a young age and I have tried to find others in a similar vein to no avail and I own over 2000 rock/metal CD’s and have followed the scene since the mid 80’s. A totally under estimated guitarist in my opinion. Long live The Cult.
The structure of the lessons are good, it varies between guitar technical stuff and theory as you progress, meaning that you won’t get bored of any single topic, and you’ll have a chance to try out the theoretical bits one step at a time. It’s a shame they never made newer editions of this book with more graphics and supplemental audio-video tools.
With a super-low action (see page XX) you might have trouble muting the strings because they will require so little pressure to sound, but you must. It’s the downside of having such a low action. You’ll find barre chords easy, but it’s going to take a light touch and lots of practice to get those notes muted properly.

Mr. White is an incredibly underrated guitarist. His singles (From the White Stripes) always span with just three to four chords and his simplistic blues rhythm and picking styles have him overlooked most of the time. However, his masterful use of the Digitech Whammy and is erratic playing make for some of the most memorable guitar solos ever. Check out Ball and a Biscuit and try not to like that solo. One of my favorite Jack White moments was during the 2004 Grammys, where he took 7 Nation Army and went into a cover of Son House’s Death Letter (another artist who I had to unwillingly cut out of the list). In an awards show celebrating Justin Timberlake and Missy Eliot, Jack White took time to give a salute to where things got started, to an artist born a century ago.
The following figure illustrates a typical heavy-metal riff using both movable and open-position power chords. If you have an electric guitar and an amp or effect device that enables you to overdrive it, use distortion while practicing this progression. You can use either the two- or three-string version of the power chords.
Ideally, your choice between the electric or acoustic guitar should be determined solely by a desire for one over the other. However, the choice may realistically be limited by your budget. Starting out with an electric guitar is generally more expensive than an acoustic guitar because of the need for an amplifier and other accessories. If the electric guitar is what you really want but is outside your budget, then a little more time and savings will be well worth the wait.
The cost of an electric guitar can be greatly reduced if you are willing to take the time to look for a quality used guitar. Close inspection of a used guitar by an experienced guitarist can act as a safeguard against buying a “lemon”. Used guitars can be found just about anywhere instruments are sold (even retailers sell used guitars), or from any of the many people who have at least attempted the craft. If you want a warrantied, brand-new electric guitar then it is possible to find good quality at a low price. Local music retailers offer you hands on testing prior to purchase, but if you are confident in knowing your ideal guitar specs, you can take advantage of online guitar sources such as the retailer’s site, auction sites, classified ads, or directly from electric guitar manufacturers.

Keith Richards on 10 and John Williams and Julian Bream on 74/75? That must be a kind of joke. Both, Williams and Bream, will easily knock-out 90 % of the Rock heroes, when it comes to guitar technique. Also some Jazz guitarists like John McLaughlin are much underrated. Musical skills are more important than fame regardless of the style a guitarist is playing.
Always get the facts. Ask what has been done to make the instrument easier to play. Many important issues rest on the quality and playability of your instrument. There is no greater impedance to progress, developing proper technique and the enjoyment of learning to play than a poorly constructed instrument or one that is not correctly set up. Both the electric and the acoustic guitar will play with relative ease as long as they are properly adjusted and the size is well suited for the player.
My favourite adage applies: buy cheap, buy twice. I rate the Yamaha Pacifica guitars (which start around £200/$350). They have a thin neck (which is good for rock) and consistently excellent build quality. I don’t think there is much of a question about the quality of these guitars and most of the other teachers I respect recommend them as well. There are many cheaper guitars out there but for the few pounds you will save you are much better off going for a Pacifica in my humble opinion. I never owned one myself (and I don’t have any kind of deal going with them at all), but have played many that students bought in over the years, which is why I recommend them to you!
Electric guitars are physically somewhat easier to play, assuming they are properly adjusted, because they have a smaller body, thinner neck, and use lighter gauge strings. The pickups and amplifier do all the work of projecting the sound, so a lighter touch along with lighter strings makes it easier to play. An electric guitar needs to be plugged into an amplifier, which must be turned on before playing. For some, the extra effort that it takes to plug into an amplifier and turn it on may be enough to keep them from playing as often or taking advantage of a spontaneous moment to pick it up and play.

In the 1950s and 1960s, some guitarists began exploring a wider range of tonal effects by distorting the sound of the instrument. To do this, they used overdrive — increasing the gain of the preamplifier beyond the level where the signal could be reproduced with little distortion, resulting in a “fuzzy” sound. This effect is called “clipping” by sound engineers, because when viewed with an oscilloscope, the wave forms of a distorted signal appear to have had their peaks “clipped off”, in the process introducing additional tones (often approximating the harmonics characteristic of a square wave of that basic frequency). This was not actually a new development in the musical instrument or its supporting gear, but rather a shift of aesthetics, such sounds not having been thought desirable previously. Some distortion modes with an electric guitar increase the sustain of single notes and chords, which changes the sound of the instrument. In particular, distortion made it more feasible to perform guitar solos that used long, sustained notes.

Use your 1st, 3rd and 4th fingers as shown, and start by putting your 1st finger in the 3rd fret of the sixth string (the note G). Then put down your 3rd and 4th fingers. If this is a bit of stretch, don’t worry, you will soon limber up! Try to keep them together, the 3rd finger kind of on top of the 4th as shown.
Until the 1950s, the acoustic, nylon-stringed classical guitar was the only type of guitar favored by classical, or art music composers. In the 1950s a few contemporary classical composers began to use the electric guitar in their compositions. Examples of such works include Luciano Berio’s Nones (1954) Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Gruppen (1955–57); Donald Erb’s String Trio (1966), Morton Feldman’s The Possibility of a New Work for Electric Guitar (1966); George Crumb’s Songs, Drones, and Refrains of Death (1968); Hans Werner Henze’s Versuch über Schweine (1968); Francis Thorne’s Sonar Plexus (1968) and Liebesrock (1968–69), Michael Tippett’s The Knot Garden (1965–70); Leonard Bernstein’s MASS (1971) and Slava! (1977); Louis Andriessen’s De Staat (1972–76); Helmut Lachenmann’s Fassade, für grosses Orchester (1973, rev. 1987), Valery Gavrilin Anyuta (1982), Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint (1987), Arvo Pärt’s Miserere (1989/92), György Kurtág’s Grabstein für Stephan (1989), and countless works composed for the quintet of Ástor Piazzolla. Alfred Schnittke also used electric guitar in several works, like the “Requiem”, “Concerto Grosso N°2” and “Symphony N°1”.
The guitar player who makes his guitar sound anything but a guitar. Helicopter rudders, disc scratching, and his use of the kill switch for staccato like guitar riffs has made him probably the most innovative guitar player of our time. He is a guitarist who can take feedback, and ground hum from his own body into coherent music. Be it Rage Against The Machine, or Audioslave you can always see Morello’s signature licks shining through.
When calculating electric guitar cost, you should also consider the need for an amplifier, strap, case or gig-bag, and patch chord. The option of purchasing a guitar kit can lower the cost of an electric guitar and its necessary accessories. These package deals can be found for as low as $300 for beginners, while higher-level players may be interested in packages in the $500 area. Guitar kits can contain all accessories, or some combination of them like a guitar and amp alone.
The “learn guitar books” (both acoustic and electric) are here to stay, since thousands of guitar lesson books are being sold everyday, so I thought I would buy, read and compare a couple of these books and see how they perform.

No book is ever going to be a suitable replacement for an actual guitar teacher, but if you want a straight forward guide that will set out the foundations in a clear and easy to digest manner this book is great.
Piano lessons provide for more instant gratification. It is simply easier to play a note – all you have to do is sit up straight, pick your wrists up, gently curl your fingers and press a key. Granted, the piano does become tricky later on when you start to play rhythmically independent notes between different fingers and hands. With guitar, there’s more coordination involved in the beginning. Students have to learn how to pluck and fret the string at the same time without dampening the sound, whereas beginner piano students won’t use two hands right away.
