Unless your goal is to play classical or acoustic music, most experts recommend starting with an electric guitar because it has lighter strings and can be easier to play than an acoustic. Use of audio feedback to enhance sustain and change timbre. In the 1970s, designers began to use exotic man-made materials such as aircraft-grade aluminum, carbon fiber, and ebonol. Makers known for these unusual materials include John Veleno, Travis Bean, Geoff Gould, and Alembic.
The final stages of on-board sound-shaping circuitry are the volume control (potentiometer) and tone control (a low-pass filter which “rolls off” the treble frequencies). Where there are individual volume controls for different pickups, and where pickup signals can be combined, they would affect the timbre of the final sound by adjusting the balance between pickups from a straight 50:50.

Semi-acoustic guitars have a hollow body (similar in depth to a solid-body guitar) and electronic pickups mounted on the body. Open-position chords are aptly named because they involve unfretted strings that can ring open, along with the fretted notes. Open-position chords have a “jangly” pleasant feature, sometimes referred to as “cowboy chords.” These 24 chords make-up just about all the chords you need for rock guitar in open position:

Note that ‘semi-acoustics’ are not really acoustic, they are electric guitars with a semi-hollow body, and so are sometimes confusingly referred to as semi-acoustics. However, they play like electrics.
The following figure illustrates a typical heavy-metal riff using both movable and open-position power chords. If you have an electric guitar and an amp or effect device that enables you to overdrive it, use distortion while practicing this progression. You can use either the two- or three-string version of the power chords.

About 30 years ago, a fellow co-worker began teaching me how to play electric guitar. I believe it was an Aria Pro Strat. He had been playing for 20 plus years at this time and was a very good teacher, he owned a 1958 Les Paul. I have not played since he was in a car wreck in 1990 as he could not return to work. He was however able to continue to play, its just our schedules never allowed the time to take lessons. He passed away in 2011, and since I retired last year, I’d like to take up lessons. I found your article very helpful in selecting an electric guitar. It mentions a lot of things most people do not consider when buying.
I am pleased to see some jazz and blues guys on a list. This is rare because most people only like what they are used to and most people have not been exposed to much of anything except the middle of the road. One name left off your list is Tommy Bolin, a truly underated player. Remember, there is no such thing as good or bad music, just what you like.

Use your 1st, 3rd and 4th fingers as shown, and start by putting your 1st finger in the 3rd fret of the sixth string (the note G). Then put down your 3rd and 4th fingers. If this is a bit of stretch, don’t worry, you will soon limber up! Try to keep them together, the 3rd finger kind of on top of the 4th as shown.
Nice list Klaus, but probably not really possible to do(so). So many names are missing. And K. Richards between Cooder and Frusciante?!?! Sorry, but not in my observable universe. And,(i´m serious as cancer, Klaus), you are not allowed to forget about Neil Schon. I have seen this small man live in 2008, and I can tell you Klaus, you cannot, I repeat: CAN!NOT!….. ignore this guitar player! Never ever. No way. Even for an unperfect list, even if you really do not like the music of Journey, this is an “unforgivable” mistake. But do not fret, Klaus; nobody´s perfect……;)
I guess since he’s not even on the list no one has heard of him. But in my opinion, he is much better than many of those who are at the top of this list. Just listen to his Second Winter album and you will see the light.
Buckethead would be Top 5 easy if he were more mainstream. The man can play anything and make it his own. If you’re interested, I’d give “Nottingham Lace”, “Final Wars”, “Big Sur Moon”, “Population Override”, and “Soothsayer” a try just to get an idea of what I’m talking about. The sky is the limit from there.
